9 for 9 and One to Go

View

Hey guys!

Here are a few pictures from the last Sheep Hunt. The hunter was Keith Redding from Wisconsin.

We had an awesome hunt with lots of action!  There were legal rams at 19, 15, 8, and 17 yards in three stalks!  The details are good!!!  Keith shot his Ram at 17 yards on the fifth day of the hunt, but only the fourth day hunting. Its gross score was 157 3/8 and net green was 155 3/8.

We had tough weather... wind and rain.  But all ended well!  I have one more Bighorn Sheep Hunt starting on the 16th and then the Sheep Season will be finished. We've had a lot of fun this year. 9 for 9 so far!!!  Only one to go!

Happy Hunting,

Dustin Roe

6 Bullets, 6 Antelope!

Sitka's Kevin Sloan made good on our first stalk of Montana's Rifle Antelope Opener, making a perfect 70 yard shot on the best antelope we've ever harvested out in Eastern Montana.

Kevin and I made the journey east from Bozeman to hunt antelope with my father (Scott Seacat) and my godfather (John Armstrong).  We've been hunting this beautiful piece of property for the past decade and my dad's been hunting this general area since before I was born.  We definitely know the country... scouting isn't necessary, we do the same hunt every year and we consistently see upwards of 300 antelope per trip.  This year would be no different and we had a great time.

I have a bow only buck tag, and due to a busy schedule during the antelope rut, I never made it out to hunt earlier than rifle opener... this meant bow hunting with orange on... only after everyone else harvested their bucks!  I told the boys, let's make this perfect... three bucks with three bullets... and that's exactly how it worked out!  John harvested a great buck with one shot from 216 yards, Kevin tagged out on his with one shot from 70, and my dad filled his tag with one shot from 220... nice work all around.

I couldn't get the bucks to cooperate and get a good opportunity to fill my buck tag with the bow (after they'd been "rifle educated"), but Kevin, Dad, and I each had a separate doe tag.  Time to switch to the rifle!  Kevin and I made a good stalk into 300 yards from a well educated band and I was able to make a perfect shot on a doe with my titanium remington .280... I hit nothing but heart... and the tenderloins are marinating as I type!  Kevin also made a great shot at 374 on his antelope doe, and my dad rounded out the group with another one shot harvest on his doe from 200 yards.

6 antelope, 3 bucks, 3 does.... 6 empty pieces of brass.  That's how it's done in Eastern Montana.

Its not about the Bike...graciously stolen title from Lance

But sometimes it is, when, for me, its your most powerful stamina and leg strengthening program. But, like many things, you slip. I'm not getting my fifty arrows shot a day, I'm not playing with my gear daily, and I'm certainly not on my bike as much as I should be. None the less, my most recent test of manliness occurred this weekend when I partook in Levi Leipheimer's Gran Fondo Century Ride. It was a bone crusher, with the hill climbs and all, but spectacular due to the scenery and brotherhood. It made me think of a big backcountry trip you make after Elk...same deal, but in spandex for speed.

103 Miles of pain, almost 7 hours later...I find my self over the line, laying on the grass, barely alive wondering why I didn't practice over 25 miles at least a little to get ready.

But then happy!

Could have been one of the hardest physcial things I've accomplished physically and mentally in recent years. I tried to take it easy and just cruise...as I'd been coached to do.

Couldn't do it and dropped the hammer.

My body hates me, but It'll get over it. We're still friends.

So, go out and do something.

September Fever

Another elk season has come along and though I wasnt lucky enough to conect with a bull this year, I can honestly say dad and I chased the hell out of the them and had a great time doing it.

The first leg of this years rut for me was back to my home state of OR...then in the later part of September it was off to Montana...here is a a short video my good friend Jeff Dunn put together of our trip to OR. He spent only 2 of the 8 days with us and captured some solid footage. Stay tuned for some photos from MT...

Best of luck to all that are still on the pursuit...Im already counting the days and anticipating the 2011 rut...but for now, my wifes happy to have me home...I think:)
