Families that Play Together Stay Together

Four years ago, I had the opportunity to join an organization called
Colorado Youth Outdoors (CYO)
. As an instructor, I get to spend every Wednesday evening helping parents and kids do the things I hold so dear to my own heart. Colorado Youth Outdoors is an organization that gives parents and kids the gift of time together. We teach a curriculum that covers fly-fishing, fly tying, spin fishing, archery, trap shooting, and survival while supplying all necessary tools to do so. We allow them to build relationships through outdoor activities. Having the opportunity to teach people something I am passionate about while watching relationships strengthen between parents and kids was something I always wanted to be a part of. Now, families come to us wanting to know if they can go through the curriculum a second time. As an organization, we decided that we would offer an adventure series for families to take what they have learned and apply it to actual hunting and fishing adventures. CYO now offers big game hunts that include deer and antelope, along with pheasant hunts and fly and ice fishing trips. This year, we added a waterfowl program that I was very excited to head. Amplifying my excitement was the opportunity to join an awesome team as a Sitka Waterfowl Prostaffer. It was the topping on the cake.
For the waterfowl program, I offered a two-day beginner waterfowl class where we went over everything from proper gear to rules and regulations, bird identification and our responsibility as waterfowlers to preserve our sport. It was such a pleasure to bring this to families who wanted to become waterfowlers.
After completing the class, we offered eight waterfowl hunts during the 2012-2013 Colorado season. On our 12-pond, 250-acre facility, we set up blinds, placed decoys, and equipped families to have the best waterfowl experience possible.
Being able to teach families and actually get them outdoors has been priceless. Knowing that I have given people the skills and information to enjoy such a wonderful sport and represent hunting is the best feeling in the world. I am very blessed to represent two organizations, CYO and Sitka Gear, and to share each of their mission statements.
Truly Humbled,
Greig McAlpin
