The Ambient Hoody is everything we like in a mid-layer insulation piece — versatile, packable and durable, but adapts to changing weather conditions and levels of activity. Utilizing low-bulk PrimaLoft® Evolve active insulation, this half-zip pullover hoody delivers plenty of warmth when you’re still, breathes well and manages moisture in active situations and dries quickly if it gets wet. This technical hoody is ideal under a shell during cold weather hunts, on its own during brisk spring and fall evenings in camp, or tossed into your pack for summertime backpacking trips into the high country.

Why We Made This

Our goal was to create a layer that worked harder and performed smarter. The answer was in partnering with PrimaLoft® Evolve for the most active insulation on the market. Active insulation’s biggest benefit is its ability to adapt—it traps heat while you’re sitting, and breathes more efficiently than static insulation while you’re on the move. The Ambient jacket or hoody will increase the performance of your clothing system for any pursuit functioning as a mid or outer layer depending on the need.

Huge fan of this piece. Since I bought it, I have not taken it out of my pack, no matter the pursuit. It's very light, extremely warm, and packs down to nothing. It's warm enough to be the only thing I bring for potential chilly early season nights, and has proven to be warm enough to wear under a shell in late season temps down to the teens. Fit is great, not too tight, not too loose; order your t-shirt size and you'll be fine. Like some of the other reviewers, the only change I would make would be to add some pockets to it. Other than that, it can't get much better.

This is also the best hoodie to cut lumber in fall/winter, with just a T-shirt on underneath.

Did not hold up to a full season, the insulation is indeed amazing, the warmth to weight is and was the selling point as is the temperature regulation which is the only reason I am giving a 2 star rating. That being said the face fabric needs some serious work to be Sitka gear quality. I wore this as a insulation layer on about 12 waterfowl hunts under the Delta wading jacket as well as a layer under my Jet stream jacket when sitting in a tree stand whitetail hunting. The piling and wear on the fabric is unbelievable for about 30-40 uses in the field. It's bad, the jacket looks like its been worn for 10 seasons. There are grinning seams as well. Anywhere the jacket contacted a friction point IE top of waders and shoulder straps it looks like someone took sand paper to the fabric. Overall it's the only purchase from Sitka I wish I hadn't made.

Ridiculously fast drying. Made a hard push to get to a couple of elk with a buddy on snow shoes in 3 ft snow straight up the mountain. Got both and started working. Was wearing a core lightweight hoody and this pullover hoody. Both were soaked with sweat. Wind was blowing and sun and temp dropping. By the time I made it 70 yards on snowshoes back to my elk I was dry. Processed elk by headlamp in the wind and got it down the mountain. Never cold. Washed blood off last 6 inches of the sleeve in a creek. It was dry some time before making it to the truck 30min later. I have been caught with cotton sweatsoaked back in the day. Without stopping and building a fire to dry out would have died. This piece allows your body heat to be the fire. Amazing

How can I give this more than 5 stars?!?! I love this hoody so much. I wear it for days on end to the point it annoys my wife. I was skeptical at first because it was so light and you can see through it. But I put it to the test in Colorado and Argentina this year. Both times in freezing temperatures with just a t-shirt under it. I was warm and so comfortable. I've worn in 60 degree on its own, and down close to 0 with just a t-shirt, Aerolite jacket and jeans. I've hiked to 14k ft in every weather condition imaginable. Not once was I ever too hot or too cold. I don't know the since behind it or how Sitka made it, but I promise the ambient hoody will blow your mind. I WILL own this in every single pattern.

Look, I'm as cheap as they come. I've tried almost every brand of hunting clothing out there and if I haven't tried it, I promise I've spent countless hours researching it. I'm the kind of person that will spend 4 hours researching a $20 product and comparing it before a purchase. I can say with absolute certainty that Sitka is the BEST clothing line on the market. Not just hunting clothes, but best overall. Their clothes are cozy, durable, and designed to keep you extremely comfortable with minimal layers and bulk. You can buy other brands and replace them every few years, or buy Sitka and your set for decades if not life. Buy once cry once!

Bottom line is this isn't clothing, its equipment. More than that, it's equipment that could quite literally save your life in the back country. Once you realize that, the price is absolutely justifiable. I trust this company so much that I will buy their stock if they go public and I'd quit my job to work for them if they have an opening. That is how much I believe in Sitka.

This piece, layered on top of the core light weight hoody, is unreasonably good. I’ve been testing gear in high intensity go-stop-go winter activities (special operations mountain activities & backcountry skiing) for years. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I’ve been testing it in high/dry 7,000-10,000ft elevations in temperatures between 5° - 22° F, in light and occasionally heavy snowfall. It releases sweat into the environment while cutting enough wind to prevent a sharp chill. It’s warm enough that stopping for a few minutes in 5°temp doesn’t feel like a survival situation and, while it’s by no means waterproof, and I don’t notice moisture beading on the surface, the outer material dries so fast that snow + sweat doesn’t saturate the system. “Baking it dry” (with body heat) happens seemingly instantly, so it’s always doing its job and hasn’t made me feel a chill from retained moisture.

I haven’t been in wet-snow or light-rain conditions with this yet, and I would not expect it to perform as well as it has in a high/dry environment… but I’m open to being surprised.

I’m waiting for the solid brown to be restocked because I end up wearing this (optifade) everywhere and people are noticing lol I don’t think the other camouflage patterns will be different enough to signal that, yes, I do laundry and prefer wearing clean clothes.

I’m actually wearing this system right now next to the fire in my living room. The range is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen and used and depended on a lot.

This is the best hoody ever. It’s so light and warm. I just love how the whole thing feels I can wear it against my skin with a shell over it and I’m good. Or just wear it around the house lounging around. I just wish they didn’t sell out of the Pyrite color so fast. I’m about to throw a base layer underneath and put my jacket on over this you’ll stay warm in to 30s. For real though I leave the office in this thing and jump in the woods it’s that awesome. Pair it with fanatic hoody or core lightweight goody is what I normally do. I’m 6’1” XL is perfect alone, act shirt and bigger than a fanatic hoody I’d say.

I’m loving the hoody. I understand others wishing it had pockets, but I really appreciate the light weight and ability to stuff this in my pack. Plus, while wearing my pack, the pockets would be covered and unusable. It truly does keep you warm if moving without over heating. I’ve used it down to the low 30s with just a core lightweight hoody and a core t-shirt while wearing my pack and I’ve remained very comfortable.
I also use it white tail bow hunting as a mid layer and it is a great insulating piece with a warm hood.

I haven’t had problems with it snagging but I wasn’t in thorny areas elk hunting this year. However, I could see that being an issue.

I liked it so much, I bought my wife the Women’s jacket, She is very active outdoors and she calls it the magic jacket because she said she’s comfortable in most temps and activity levels.

I was surprised that there was absolutely no bulk wearing it as a mid-layer piece under my Stratus jacket which is a performance-fit design. What a great piece of gear, it's almost perfect. Just got back from an AZ Couse Deer hunt, and had over a week to fully test it out and evaluate it. I was very impressed. Weight to warmth ratio is incredible. Very packable. Sitka rates this on the low side for durability, and that's accurate. If you encounter brush like catclaw, you're getting hung up and it will tear. Hood is excellent too, and the primaloft extends into the inside of the hood. Overall, this product is really good, and could be great. Here's the part where I see if Sitka is paying attention...want to make this great, Sitka? Here's my sort list of things that could be improved (most of which have been mentioned by others). Add some hand packets, or maybe a kangaroo pouch, as mentioned by others. Make the outer material a little tougher. Add some thumb hooks so it can easily be used as an under layer. Reinforce the elbows and maybe other high wear spots. Lastly, maybe add some pit zips. Seriously though, try this out, you'll really like it.

Sitka is feeling a little like Apple for me with this piece. They clearly left off features knowing in a year or two they will come out with a newer version that has all the features people are asking for: increased durability (or at least be honest and give it a lower durability rating), kangaroo pouch, more pockets, and additional colors. No way they didn't get feedback from the field team for this stuff. Based on reviews, I think I'll stick with the Celsius Midi as my laying insulation piece for now and hopefully can be convinced to switch after they stop sitting on upgrades they know should have been included on the first iteration.

Two different days of hunting above 7500 ft elevation I did put on my puffy coat while sitting but that is too be expected. I hunt a lot of waterfowl and whitetails in the Midwest. Purchased this piece early in September for this season’s PA archery season.
First wear was great but with the claim of “clothing to Gear” and paying this kind of money I would think that it would have tight wrist cuffs as well as a much needed kangaroo pouch. Also wouldn’t hurt to have a peep hole for the atty harness if you would want to wear it as the outer garment.
Durability seam a little on the weak side as it already has scuffs and shags from leaning against trees in the tree stand.
Overall it is a great lightweight piece and seems to keep core warmth on those cool mornings it just would be great with the updates that archery hunters need.
Would be really cool if it was available in the MUD color that the Jacket is offered in.

I have owned so many pieces of hunting clothing over the years. Ever year I buy something new in search of the next best thing to improve my set up or system not necessarily Sitka. The mid layer has always been an issue for me when it comes to comfort. My mid layer for the past few year has been the sika heavy weight hoodie and I was never really happy with it. The arms were tight and the inside material caused it to stick to the base layer never allowing the arms to rotate into place when you put it on. I was always rotating the sleeves and it severely compromised comfort. That said, the Ambient Hoody is without a doubt the single greatest article of hunting clothing I have ever worn. Reason being, it was warm enough with the fleece lining that I didn’t need an additional layer for the 35-40 degree mornings, and it was breathable enough that I could keep it on all day when it was raining. The best part- I’ve had tons of gear between hunting and the army, that claim to be “water resistant” until you start moving around…. This hoodie stood up to 3 hours of straight rain while we worked up to a ridge for glassing, and I was completely dry the entire time. I couldn’t believe it. Got this piece as a midlayer. Got the size LT which fits perfect for me being at 200 and 6’ tall. This fits excellent under the kelvin light down jacket which is a large and a large tall mountain jacket, with no restriction of movement.

I have put on a lot of Sitka out of the box, but this may be the best piece of gear I have ever put on. The fit is perfect, the material inside has to be the most comfortable I've felt in the Sitka line. The material is silent for all things outdoors and hunting. Sitka hit all marks on this one!

Throw the Ambient on for a cold pre-dawn start, and it feels as warm as a puffy. But start moving, and your apparent body temperature just doesn't spike. The ultralight DWR shell also punches above its weight with weather resistance. Truly a layer you can put on and leave on through pretty much anything
