Rain gear is notoriously noisy, and while stalking big game, noise is not an option. The Thunderhead Jacket combines an exceptionally waterproof and breathable 3-layer GORE-TEX fabric with an ultra-quiet brushed face to keep you both protected and silent, and a brushed backer for against-the-skin comfort.

Used this in Alaska for a hunt off of the Denali Highway. On day 2, it was in the high 30's and raining constantly. This jacket did not keep me incredibly dry and was tight on arms, shoulders and any other place where heat would be maintained. The cuffs also soaked up crap tons of water and as a result I was soaked for the rest of the trip. The brushed fabric was nice for staying quiet but, if your looking for warmth and water proofing, there are better options. I purchased a large.

I took it on a Northern BC moose hunt and after 2 days of use it started to leak like crazy in the chest and forearms along with the front face of the pant. I contacted SITKA right away and they replaced the jacket and pants no questions asked. The set I had replaced I just took on a Caribou hunt in Northern BC this year and after day 1 it started to leak on both arms like crazy and the face of the pants started to leak very bad as well. I do not recommend this set to anyone after my experiences. Hopefully SITKA is able to fix these issues in the future as this is unacceptable for a rain gear set that costs this much.

First time wearing this rain gear, purchased 8-22-22. Leaks badly from around the chest seem. We had intermittent light to moderate showers and the leak started within 20 minutes. The sleeve cuff materials are NOT waterproof and absorb water like a sponge causing water to absorb in the shirt below. Within 20-30 minutes I was wet half way to my elbows. Very poor design, very poor workmaship, for a very expensive Jacket, ironicaly called "Thunderhead".

I am 5’11” and 180 lbs. The large fits very well around my arms and is big enough around my chest and core for a mid layer or vest. The arms are about an 1.5” too long and would be a bit restrictive for a mid layer, so if I need some extra warmth I’ll use my Sitka vest. All in all I’m very impressed with this product.

I've had this jacket for about 4 years. Overall, I like the brushed quiet surface so much that I would like to see it in Open Country. Finally, the forearm sleeves are tight (I am quite slim), which prevents using any but the lightest mid-layer.

Just picked up this jacket. For rain gear it is surprisingly quiet. I love the narrow cuffs to help prevent water and debris from getting inside your jacket. I usually wear a medium but bought a large to have some room for layering. Fit is perfect. Only complaint is the jacket could be slightly longer. Will be a great jacket for spring Turkey or running and gunning moose and deer in the fall.

I wore this jacket on my 2021 early archery elk season in the Pacific Northwest and it worked great! It kept me dry in consistently wet conditions and took a beating from all the brush, branches and tall grass. I'm glad I purchased this jacket and I will be wearing on all my hunts from now on. It is a little bulky to pack, but for my environment, it is worth it.

I bought the Thunderhead Jacket last year right before deer season, It was my first purchase of Sitka and I was skeptical of it at first considering how light it was. I am now writing this review towards the end of duck season and i can rightfully say this jacket is amazing! I have put it through the ringer such as walking through briar bushes and skiing down mountains. Over all love this jacket and 100% recommend it.

If you're familiar with rain gear, you know harshell is about the loudest material in the world. I am using the thunderhead jacket this year and it's amazing how quiet rain gear can be just by using the brushed system this piece uses. After putting this coat to the test in the Pacific north west I'll be definitely picking up the matching pants. Great piece of kit for the pack or wear it all the time as it's surprisingly breathable for rain gear.

This is a MUST HAVE jacket! It is worth every single penny. I took this jacket with me on a 10 day Alaskan caribou hunt {Sept. 2019} and now I never leave home without it. 4 out of the 10 days in Alaska we experienced off and on extreme rain/snow pending the time of day and I remained dry and warm (with appropriate layering & thunderhead pant). Its built in quiet technology will truly keep you deaf to your environment.

I am unsure as to why Sitka built what appears to be a 2.0 version of this jacket. However, I have dabbled with the Cloudburst jacket and I would never trade out my Thunderhead for another in the same category.

The jacket is very quiet and doesn’t allow water to permeate it’s exterior. The problem I ran into is it’s durability. The hem containing the drawstring came undone and I noticed it was glued. The zipper also came a loose after a few hunts. The Sitka Warranty department fixed the issue apparently and sent it back via Fed Ex. I still don’t have the jacket and it was received by Sitka over a month ago. They’re telling me it’s “Fed Ex’s fault and all I can do is wait” while they file a claim. The carrier currently has no idea when it will be delivered and our Deer season ends in just under 2 weeks. I’ve received 10 notifications saying the jacket would be delivered and have received nothing! Looks as if it’s a 320.00 loss and I’m stuck with nothing.

I wore this on a two-week hunt in a remote area of Alaska. This worked perfectly in snow, wind, and rain. I wore it when glassing, hunting, and eventually packing out a ram. It is easy to to use this jacket when conditions dictate the need for different types of laying underneath. I couldn't be happier with this jacket. It serves its purpose very well. Next up: turkey and whitetail.

The Thunderhead series is marketed as "Soft, quiet rain gear for the big game keep you quiet whether you're busting through soaked brush or pushing through a mountain squall on a high-stakes ambush." Which, in my opinion, means it's marketed towards the active hunter moving and stalking big game. This makes the very conspicuously absent ventilation (pit-zips) that such a hunter might desire particularly egregious; I can't understand this decision, people want a quiet piece of rain gear that breathes well. Is it a cost saving measure? Does Sitka not want to have too much cross-over of certain features among their own products (i.e. the cloudburst line)? I don't know. Just my 2-cents, I still like what they're doing overall.

This jacket is one of my favorites! My only wish would be to throw in pit zips and a pocket layout like the jet stream jacket and you would have a five star winner. Yes, that would add weight, but then THIS would be your soft shell, windstopper, rain shell, all in one and the few added ounces would be incomparable to leaving your soft shell at home and adding a mid-insulation down or active insulation layer. Make this and I will buy another to replace the one I have!

The perfect jacket for a drizzly to rainy hunt. As far as rain jackets go - this one is the quietest I've been able to find (which is saying a lot). I use it a lot for windy glassing sessions as it completely knocks down Montana winds when some of the other layers don't. I don't have a single complaint - fits well, good price for a durable rain jacket, multi-use. It's not one of those "rain jackets" that you just leave in your pack all season - its value extends well-beyond a rainy hunt.

Great product here. I used this jacket for the previous Georgia turkey season and it kept me dry on many hunts with during spring showers. It is a super quiet material so even when not using it during the rain, I was able to stalk up closely to several birds in the fields. My only wish is that it had a little better ventilation, as it can get quite warm. But I do highly recommend this piece of gear!

I had the opportunity to test the Thunderhead Jacket this past turkey season in the Adirondack Mountains. It poured for 3 hours continuously as sat on a powerline opening waiting for a turkey. When I undressed in the cabin the only part of me that was wet was my hands. For relatively inexpensive rain gear, I was very impressed. I'm 5'7" and weigh 155 lbs and the large was just big enough for layering at 39 degrees.

Wore this every day hunting in Quebec. Poured the first day and never felt a thing. For the next few days weather was fine, but ground saturated. I had no issues taking a knee or sitting on the ground for a long glassing session – experienced no soak through or seepage and it dried quickly back in camp. Bought a second one in a different pattern. He coat is great to wear hunting or around town on cold days. Perfect piece of equipment.

Wore the Thunderhead set for deer hunting this season in the pouring rain. I hunted both from a stand and spot and stalked and it kept me comfortable in both scenarios. Will most definitely be my go to set from here on out. Blocked the wind and the rain and when I took it off after 4 hours in the rain, the layers underneath were bone dry. Can't say enough about this set.

I really liked this jacket when wearing it in light rain, but not so much when the rain got heavy. Two of the days I was elk hunting, it rained all day. After about 2 hours I noticed my arms getting wet. By the end of the day, my arms were wet up to my elbows. I found that the water runs to the lowest point of the material, then wicks up on the inside. My core stayed dry the whole day, but my arms were soaked. It makes for a long day when it’s only 38 degrees and wet.

I just returned from a week long Moose hunt in Newfoundland, Canada. We had a some cold temps and a fair bit of rain. I used the Thunderhead jacket and pants all week. It keep me dry and warm the whole time. I did buy a size bigger then I usually wear for layers as i knew I would wear it for cold mornings not moving while glassing and went a bit heavy on the layers. It was conformable for hiking and very quiet for stalking. The pattern worked well for me but I know a few guys that would be interested in the same gear in Sitka's other patterns. I feel that this product is a great investment and well worth the price. It is hard to find quiet Gore-tex gear and this fills that gap. I would and have recommended this product to anyone that wants to stay dry and quiet. Great job Sitka on this one!

Washed this suit after gutting a moose and accidentally left my range finder in the jacket pocket during the wash cycle. To my surprise the range finder was dry and so was the inside of the pocket. Great jacket, took it on a Alaskan caribou hunt, and a mule deer hunt (sealed the deal on both). Though it has some set backs, when hung to dry water accumulates on the cuffs making for temporary cold hands and the chills down your back, The pattern is a little bright I think (less whites) at least for early season stuff, Pit-zips would be nice but thats on me for for getting this series.
BUT over all I am satisfied, it did its job and is going to for years to come. THANKS SITKA

Amazing build quality, very quiet, guaranteed waterproof, however; this jacket has no ventilation. I ultimately returned this jacket for the lack of "pitzips". I am very active in the cold weather hunts,
(hiking/climbing) and regularly over heated due to the lack of ventilation. I was forced to unzip the front of the jacket to regulate my temperature which is not convenient when loaded down with gear and also greatly compromises the waterproof capabilities of the jacket.

I really wanted to keep the jacket, I liked it, but felt anything short of perfection at this price point was unacceptable.

Thanks Vincent -
We agree and intentionally left out pit zips as we feel the Thunderhead System is more for low to moderate activity levels. We recommend the Cloudburst or Stormfront System for back country use. These systems are more light weight, more pack-able, more durable, and will dry more quickly in a tent compared to the Thunderhead. We as hunters are drawn to the Thunderhead's quiet benefits but keep in mind that when it's raining there is enough ambient noise that you can stalk in any of our rain gear. Take a look at the Cloudburst. Thanks SITKA Gear.
