Technology

Why We Made This
Traditional down insulation is easily compromised by moisture and compression while 100% synthetic insulation has the ability to withstand both but limits packability of a jacket made for frigid conditions. Our design approach was to leverage a hybrid insulation that delivers the warmth-to-weight ratio and packability of down with the durability of synthetic insulation. The added Windstopper® layer provides fully-windproof protection, serving up the ideal defense required to withstand the elements of the late season.

This jacket is so warm and comfortable that it has become my favorite. I'm at that age where the gear that keeps me warm is of the highest priority. This one is worth every penny.
Big fan of this jacket. I Dont wear it as much while hunting but when glassing or during a break while I let my other layers dry out its awesome and packs down small. Super warm back at camp worn next to skin.
I use a lot of Sitka gear for Wildlife Photography, on a resent trip to northern Minnesota in January the temps were -9 to -13F with a 20+ mph north wind.. I wore this jacket with only a longjohn top and a t-shirt and never once got cold..Amazing !!! I’m going to order a second one ( in case it becomes discontinued) because it’s that good...
Love this jacket. It's a perfect balance of warmth and packability for me. I'm not a big mountain hunter so take that for what it, might be worth to you. So far no tears or issues with the quality of the build. I love this jacket. Wish it was made in a solid color.
Tis is the best jacket EVER for winter and wind! All winter I stood waiting for the bus to take me to work and I was warm where the jacket was and frozen where it didn't cover. Can't wait for them to make a pair of wind/waterproof pant!! Highly suggest this for cold people as I have even worn it when it was 50 degrees out and it regulated my temperature just fine. Totally stops the wind which is why most of us get cold in the first place!! LOVE THIS JACKET!!!!
At first I really liked the jacket. Called it my "mountain hug".
I soon realized how poorly it was made. It will rip and tear on everything. Duct tape is a essential component. This jacket is not intended as an outer layer. Why does it need to be camouflage or even sitka. Buy a inexpensive down jacket elsewhere and spend the money saved on your outer layer.
I spent a week in northern Minnesota photographing Great Gray Owls in zero to -13° weather. I wore this jacket, had on a long-john top, and a T-shirt. I never once felt cold at all. The warmest jacket I have ever owned. I was very, very impressed....
So this very well could be my favorite piece from Sitka. And that's saying a lot. Only piece that comes close to this is the heavyweight hoody but together they are an insane duo. This is the warmest coat that I honestly know of. It is very lofty, which I love and it traps heat so well and very quickly. Never have I stayed so warm while glassing on an open hillside with the wind and snow blowing right in my face or out Coyote hunting in the winter. It's such a valuable piece of gear, not sure how I ever went without it.
I get cold sitting and glassing in the wind. That’s what this jacket is for. It’s amazingly warm, I love it. Definitely expedition fit, my other Sitka layers are L and for this one I bought a M and it has plenty of room inside for layering. I’m 5’9” 150 lbs.
Definitely a puffy. Keeps me nice in warm during subfreezing fishing trips. Quality outer layer fits right over all layers.
Outstanding cold weather puffy. Like a sleeping bag with sleeves, plenty of room, hood is great, outer shell is surprisingly tough. Definitely the best extreme cold weather layer ive have found.
So comfortable, the large fit makes it great for layering. The coat is very warm and I would suggest it for winter hunts. Fits true to size, I bought an xxl and its a bit big on me in the belly. I am 6'2 290.
Absolutely love this jacket. Knocks the wind down, keeps ya beyond warm, and is packable. Have tested it while in 20-30 deg weather up in the Rockies while sitting for hours at a time. Highly recommend!
LOVE this jacket! Was blown away with how great this jacket is, very comfortable, very warm, zero wind penetration, pockets for days, fits great! Stuff sack is super handy as well, was hunting on sleds after bison in February and as the day wore on it became to warm for the jacket - being able to stuff the jacket in the stuff sack and then strap it under the webbing on the sled was very convenient! Also a random use for the jacket in the stuff sack - shooting bag, buddy of mine forgot his bags on range day so we decided to prop it under the stock while shooting off his bipod.
Size runs a little big. I love this jacket. I was on an elk hunt last week and it kept me nice and warm. It is a great jacket. the only problem is it does not have any instructions on how to wash it.
I purchased this jacket for a late season hunt. The second time I used it was while sitting on the ground. I was glassing an area when I got cold. I put the jacket on, knowing that it wasn’t designed for any abuse. When I got up it looked like I had sit on a bird. There was white insulation everywhere. I was surprised to see a 4 inch gash in the back of the jacket at the bottom seam.
I called Sitka customer service and explained the circumstances when I returned home. The CS rep said he would send me a piece of tape to put over the tear. I asked if I should send the coat in to be looked at and he said, “honestly, they will just put tape on it here”!
This is the first bad experience I’ve had with Sitka gear and customer service.
As far as warmth and stopping the wind, 5 stars, excellent jacket.
Warmest coat I've ever owned!! It comes with a nice stuff sack which helps its pack down. I've worn this from single digits into the 30s. I call it a walking sleeping bag! I just hunted PA rifle season. 1 day it never got above 20 degrees and we had snow , wind. I was warm for hours with just the core midweight zip t under it.
Wore this every morning on a recent ID archery deer hunt. The day would start out windy and temps in the low 20s. The sizing of the jacket allows you to quickly put it on over other layers/jackets, and the hood cinches down nicely over a hat, trapping in the heat. The Windstopper was key, and it packs down pretty well to fit in the pack for glassing, etc. Definitely lives in my pack during the fall season. Very warm for the weight.
I used this on a two-week backpacking hunt in remote Alaska. This packed up perfectly and kept me super warm when I needed to glass while temperatures dropped below freezing and the wind was blowing. This is an excellent jacket for back-country hunts where you can only carry so much weight, but you need to stay warm in harsh conditions. I highly recommend this jacket.
I replaced an old Kelvin jacket (no hood) with this new model. I wear a Large and this new Kelvin has a ton of extra room in the midsection, almost to much. But I need the arm length and length in the back. It also does not have fleece on the inside of the collar like my old jacket. But it has much more loft and I like the Wind shear. I’m in Canada and no local dealers. It would have got a 5 star review if it fit better. But function I believe has improved over my old Kelvin jacket.
XL fits great,I took this out shooting yesterdayxand the wind blew the whole time then wind chill was about 13 and this coat kept me toasty warm it kept the wind out. Great coat.
Great warmth. The brimmed hood is nice once adjusted w/drawstrings. I was outside the other day- wind was 20-30, temps in the teens. I was only wearing a t-shirt underneath and was nice and toasty. Didn't feel the wind. Can't wait to use it this winter! I'm 6'2 230 athletic build and usually wear XL and some XXL in most sitka stuff. Dont size up. The XL fits great everywhere except the mid section/gut area. You could honestly fit a small child in there. No, its probably not that bad, lol.Maybe it's for maximum layering? It's not a deal breaker because this hoody is the bomb otherwise.
I have the Kelvin lite jacket in XL and it fits me well. I ordered this jacket thinking it would be just slightly larger but I think its more like a XXL-XXXL size for me. I'm 6'1 with longer arms and legs, and weigh in at 190lbs. Its a bit of a hassle to order from Canada as now I have to send it all back again, claim border taxes and reorder. It looks great though! Its just like a good down winter jacket in camo with the wind blocker.

This is a unicorn piece! This thing is way too light to be as warm as it is. It just makes no sense. INCREDIBLE hoody!
I have been piecing together a full Subalpine Sitka archery hunting outfit ever since my son bought me my first Sitka product (base layer subalpine hoodie) two Christmas' ago. I now have two different weight hoodies, one pair of core lightweight bottoms, and one pair of light pants. This Hoody Down WS was my latest purchase, but unfortunately it is going back. I bought this yesterday, and got to try it out today in Reno's 30 degree weather with about a 10 mile per hour wind. The wind cut right through both sleeves on the inside of the elbow. I stayed outside for about 25 minutes. When I got inside I noticed there was zero insulation in my right inside sleeve. At first I thought this might be for breathability. Then I realized that couldn't be, because my left inside sleeve had plenty of insulation. I'm not sure if you are supposed to manually move insulation around to where you want it, but I'm not willing to do that. I gave it 2 stars instead of one, because the other parts of the jacket seemed pretty warm.
This is the best fishing jacket I own. I've hunted with it, and hiked, and it is great for keeping warm when you are sitting still. But fishing! This is where the jacket comes into its own. I can wear anything underneath. Thick sweatshirts, other jackets, my life preserver. It handles the wind really well, and the rain/splash of waves. I wear it sometimes with a second down jacket on the inside, making like 3 inches of insulation. And that isn't everything. When the sun comes out, I can pack this jacket down to nothing and stow it away. Not in the way at all. If they made this in solid colors, I would still own one.
Great jacket. This is one of the warmest jackets I own for late season.
I really wish they would make this in a solid color set and I would use these as my everyday winter jacket!!!!
