About the Role:

At SITKA Gear, we are evolving how merchandising drives the business—expanding from store-level execution into a fully integrated, omni-channel function that influences product, planning, and go-to-market strategy.

The Retail Merchandiser plays a critical role in building consumer-right assortments that are curated, tiered, and tailored by channel to earn both consumer trust and strong commercial returns. This role owns assortment strategy across owned retail and wholesale channels, while serving as a key voice in GTM and product decisions.

You will operate at the intersection of data and instinct—translating performance insights, field feedback, and brand priorities into clear assortment strategies that drive full-price sell-through and healthy inventory flow. This is a highly cross-functional role with direct impact on how the brand shows up in stores, with partners, and ultimately with the consumer.

This position will be located at our facility in Bozeman, Montana, with the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement. Relocation assistance is available for this position.

Responsibilities:

• Own store and channel-level assortment strategy, ensuring product is curated, tiered, and consumer-right

• Build and manage store assortments, size curves, and SKU productivity to drive full-price sell-through

• Develop channel-specific assortments across wholesale tiers (Specialty, Sporting Goods, Big Box)

• Partner with Sales to bring a merchant perspective into account-level assortment decisions

• Analyze sales and inventory to drive in-season optimization and rebalancing actions

• Lead markdown and sell-down strategies to optimize margin and inventory flow

• Own Key Initiative Zone (KIZ) strategy, including product focus, KPIs, and performance tracking

• Integrate into GTM processes, delivering merchandising inputs into assortment planning and product decisions

• Establish and scale a structured feedback loop from stores and field to inform merchandising and product

• Partner cross-functionally (Planning, Retail, Marketing, VM) to ensure aligned execution from product to floor

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of 4 years of experience in merchandising, planning, or retail strategy, preferably in apparel or footwear

• Strong analytical skills with experience managing large SKU counts across multiple channels or doors

• Proven ability to translate data and insights into actionable assortment decisions

• Experience building channel or store-level assortments

• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across sales, planning, product, and retail teams

• Proficiency in Excel and retail analytics tools (e.g., Power BI)

• Ability to travel up to 10%

Responsibilities

•Drive sales growth, productivity, and profitability across the retail channel with full P&L accountability, including traffic, conversion, AOV, and product turns.

•Create consumer-first retail experiences that serve as cultural destinations, leveraging assortment strategy, community engagement, events, and localized storytelling.

•Lead the end-to-end customer journey across physical retail, ensuring store design, visual merchandising, service standards, and digital touchpoints are integrated and brand-consistent.

•Align retail and DTC e-commerce teams to optimize the omnichannel consumer journey, including buy-online-pick-up, ship-from-store, returns, and shared customer insights.

•Optimize retail productivity and inventory turns through data-driven assortment planning, in-season management, and inventory flow—always through the lens of best serving the consumer.

•Oversee retail operations at scale, ensuring excellence in inventory management, staffing models, expense control, and day-to-day execution.

•Lead store expansion and evolution, including site selection, lease negotiation, new store openings, and ongoing format innovation aligned with consumer behavior and market opportunity.

•Leverage analytics and insights to inform decisions across merchandising, inventory, marketing, and staffing, and clearly communicate insights to cross-functional partners.

•Build, inspire, and develop high-performing retail leadership teams and store managers who deliver strong results and exceptional customer experiences.

Required Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree required; degree in business, management, marketing, or a related field preferred.

•A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in multi-unit owned retail, including retail operations and/or channel leadership roles.

•Proven experience leading retail within a premium consumer brand environment, ideally $100M+ in annual revenue.

•Demonstrated ability to deliver sales growth, improve retail productivity, and exceed P&L targets while maintaining a premium brand experience.

•Strong understanding of omnichannel retail, including close partnership with DTC e-commerce to deliver a seamless consumer journey.

•Expertise in retail analytics and KPIs, including productivity metrics, inventory turns, sell-through, and conversion, with the ability to translate insights into action.

•Experience expanding and scaling an owned retail channel, including site selection, store design, hiring, and successful store openings.

•Deep knowledge of optimizing the brick-and-mortar customer journey across merchandising, visual presentation, community engagement, and store team training.

•Highly collaborative leader with a track record of influencing cross-functional partners and coaching teams through growth and change.

•Willingness to travel 50%+ nationally for store openings, visits, events, training, and market scouting.
