Backcountry Power Breakfast

  • Pursuit: Big Game

Freeze-dried meals and nutrition in the backcountry in general has come lightyears in the last few decades. However, I can’t say the same in the breakfast department. They always seem to be the same old thing – some variation of oatmeal or granola and often too sweet for my liking.

A few years ago, my brother Cam started experimenting with power breakfasts to bring along on backpack sheep hunts. Nutrient rich and calorie dense, these pack a punch and keep us fueled well into the day. You can play around with the ingredients. I gravitate towards oats, nuts and seeds, unrefined oils, natural sweetener, protein powder, and dried fruit. Pre-making and vacuum-packing them allows for customization right down to portion size and personal taste.

Please note: Measurements are approximate. Adapt as preferred – that’s the idea!

INGREDIENTS:
~3/4 heaping cup oats
~3/4 cup granola
Large scoop of whey protein powder
Heaping tablespoon of peanut butter
Heaping tablespoon of coconut oil
2 tablespoons of dried fruit (mango, cranberries, strawberries, goji berries and blueberries are awesome)
1 tablespoon flax and/or hemp hearts
1 tablespoon of chia seeds
1 tablespoon of shredded coconut
1 small scoop of honey

RECIPE:
1. Add to vacuum seal bag: chia seeds, peanut butter, coconut oil, oatmeal, ground flax, shredded coconut, dried fruit, whey protein, hemp seeds.
2.Weigh each bag to be approx 4oz for one person, 8oz for two people
3. Remember to always leave some room between the vacuum-sealed edge and your food. Leave anywhere between three to four inches at the top of the bag
4. Lay the vacuum sealing bag flat and fire that baby up!
5. Throw it in your pack and take it up the mountain.
6. Cut open vacuum sealer bag and empty into cup
7. Boil water
8. Add enough water to cover ingredients, secure your lid tightly.
9. Stir and wait. Try not to be alarmed by the striking similarity between your breakfast and bear scat.
10. Best enjoyed with a double shot of your favorite instant coffee single.
11. Hunt hard until dark. Cheers!
