Big Game: Open Terrain

I’ve refined my system for about 15 years but write this with only one caveat — don’t simply take my word for it. Yes, these are my personal choices, but the ideal setup for you may vary based on your body type, hunt conditions and preferences...

Features & Benefits

Body-Mapped Micro-Grid Fleece

The micro-grid fleece construction is body mapped to precisely regulate your temperature so you can use it as an outer layer on milder days or as a mid layer when temperatures drop.

Fitted Drop-Away Hood

The drawstring hood pulls close without hindering your peripheral vision and stows out of the way when not in use.

Durable Water Repellent Finish

The DWR finish resists light precipitation and prevents the face fabric from wetting out.

Great jacket very versatile. Only wish they done it in a tall size and in solid colours

I'm with Chris on this one. Just finished 14 days in the Alberta Rockies and I wore this jacket everyday. Base layer of merino and a core mid weight zip and I was all set. Crazy how well the Windstopper worked while active in extreme cold as well s windy conditions. Perfect partner to the Timberline Pants.

Echo the comments on the wide temperature range. Wore it yesterday hunting sheep in Alberta Rockies with both -10C windchill and 50 kmh plus winds clocked on pocket wind meter. I was amazed with comfort level across wide range of exertion levels and temperature changes; neither too hot, nor too cold, but just right. Impressed with windstopper as experienced zero breeze through the fabric when wind got super crazy. Only wore thinnest Sitka base layer underneath and sweated less than normal with the combination during 1500 foot hike up into mountains. Pleasantly surprised by this piece of clothing. I am not a professional tester, just a hunter.

nice fit - hooded, that's excellent - blocks wind nicely - I walked across a field as it began to rain, not a downpour but rain and I was wet underneath by the time I'd fast walked 50 yards, I was disappointed in that

Top of the line. Wore this piece for 116 days on Kodiak Island last year and 30 days so far this year! Wouldn't trade it for anything. Ridiculously wide temperature range. Thanks Sitka Team for really stepping it up with design, quality, real life wearability and customer service.

Sitka seriously has outdone themselves with this jacket. For 2016, I purchased the new mountain jacket and the timberline jacket. While the Mountain jacket is a upgraded version of the jet stream light and serves a purpose the Timberline jacket is my new all-around go to jacket from Sitka. Timberline jacket is built with durability and function in mind. The comfort is excellent and weight is perfect. If you were only to purchase one jacket from Sitka in open country, the timberline is the one. The jetstream used to be my favorite but the new timberline has taken it's place. If you're in a tossup between which hunting clothing camo to go with between the big names out there, I will say I've tried them all. SitkaGear hands-down has the best warranty and customer service out there. While the clothing may be expensive, their customer service and warranty make up for any hesitation you may have in price. You will not be disappointed with the timberline jacket or the Sitka customer service.

I've been a big game hunter for over 40 years, heard about this high tech line of clothing and thought it a fad or fashion. I was wrong. A long time hunting companion convinced me to try it, I did, and was amazed. This jacket it light, tough, and amazingly warm. The vents are superb as are the pockets and hood. Didn't think I needed the hood - wrong about that too. The really incredible thing about this stuff is the Optifade camouflage. I was shocked how I seemed invisible to several bunches of elk and deer. I know this review is about this jacket, but I'll also make a pitch for the Ascent pants - amazingly quiet and tough, but superb for their freedom of movement. The only knocks I have are small: 1 - I always fit in a large size coat or jacket; I needed an XL. Try on this stuff for size. 2 - Price is high. But I still bought it and love it.

I really like the jacket. It is pretty thin and I too thought it would be too thin when the temps were dropping in the low 40's on my early season bow hunt but it turned out to be great. Sitting for a bit, I did not get chilly at all and hiking around I did not over heat or get too hot. The one negative I did find was it is a bit noisy moving around and rubbing on my pack.

Designed for the active hunter. Just worn with a light weight next to skin long sleeve, on an early season hunt. Temps dropped to 40 degrees in the morn and quickly went to 80 a few hours after sunrise. If you are static (waiting for sunrise), I found that static hunting was still a little chilly, however blocking the wind made a big difference. When walking, it was perfect. I stopped at one point to take it off thinking it was warming up on me, only to realize I needed it back on. My initial impression was that it is so thin, that it can't possibly keep me warm. To be honest, I still get scared every time I see that cold weather is forecasted. Then I walk with it, and forget about its super thin designed and focused on the stalk. I would recommend it to anyone who hunts and moves. It's light and thin, and keeps to body warm.

Cole Kramer and Dustin Roe have been talking about Hunting Dagestan Tur for years. When they finally said they were leaving on an adventure, we wanted to see a little of what they saw. So we sent photographer Steven Drake along.
