Downpour Jacket

  • Whitetail : Elevated II
(23 Reviews)

Typical rain gear is notoriously noisy, which is a nonstarter in close range encounters with the buck you’ve been patterning all year. The Downpour Jacket solves this problem with a 100% waterproof and breathable 3-layer GORE-TEX fabric featuring a soft, brushed face that keeps you deadly quiet in the treestand. Whitetail-specific features include a waterproof harness pass-through port that allows you to wear your jacket over the harness without interfering with the hood.

Sitka needs to do something about this one. I own some of their other clothes and this one isn’t like the others. I wore it shed hunting in a light steady rain and came home soaked. Water migrates up the inside of the sleeves and down from the collar/ hood. I tried it again on another trip to the woods and snugged the hood up tightly. It still seeped in and around and just didn’t work. Between the Sitka brand name, and the name of the jacket “ Downpour “ it seems like the marketing people way overplayed this one.

I purchased the Sitka Downpour System a few years ago and was very disappointed I wore it in the rain and it is absolutely useless to keep you dry. I was soaking wet. Anywhere you touch the downpour system, water goes right through it. What is the point for what it cost to buy Sitka gear. It definitely is not worth the money. So I will be shopping elsewhere for new rain gear. I waited a few years to look again to see if they changed their design lo and behold they did not why in the world would someone cell a product called downpour when it is absolutely useless in the rain.

I owned the first generation of this GTX packlite jacket in elevated forest for 10 years. I outgrew it and bought the new version in EVII. Big improvements on the second generation. I have had zero issues with it so far. Only had it about a week but was in torrential downpour with it for a few hours this past weekend and stayed bone dry.

The pants are great ! The jacket sucks ! Any pressure on the jacket like a binocular harness or gun sling transfer the water straight through. So if I want to hunt black tail in the rain I will have to do so with the harness underneath, carry my rifle and forego any sort of day pack. My Cabellas Gore-Tex knock offs perform better. Buyers remorse!

Bought this coat and matching pants. I have used them for over three years now and I have had zero issues with either. I have reconditioned them for water proofing and I have received compliments from every guide on every fishing trip I have taken them on. I am considering getting the wife a set of Sitka rain gear to use sparingly as I know they will last a lifetime. I would recommend Sitka to anyone looking for the best gear they can find.

Finally broke down and treated myself to a new set of Sitka gear. Went out in hard rain with my new Downpour Jacket elk hunting and within 2 hours I was completely soaked! After drying out the jacket at camp I tried it again with the same result. Would not recommend in heavy rain.

Love this jacket. Have owned other products claiming to be 100% waterproof and they perform well. I had this jacket on in the pouring rain turning to sleet for 4 hours, and didn’t get even a little wet. I had the base layers, and Core Lightweight shirt on underneath. If your want something warm and reliable, don’t hesitate with this jacket. Highly recommend this. I’ll be looking at getting the pants to match this next.

Love this jacket, works great as a shell over base/midlayers. Have hunted to about -15°C and total comfort with the right layering. Completely blocks the cold prairie winds. Only complaint is the zipper has separated from the bottom several times despite only wearing this during rifle season for 1.5 seasons so far. Its easy to fix (so far just re-zip), but at this price point its unacceptable so gotta go for 3 stars.

DO NOT BUY. Loudest coat I have ever worn in the tree stand. Does not fit tall people at all. Very disappointed.

Great jacket for hunting or just cool weather in general. Very light and quiet for a rain jacket. Only downside is the sleeves are uncomfortable with a t-shirt, I have to wear a long sleeve. This works out though since it's a outer layer. Super nice quality and very light. 5 stars for sure.

The downpour system is fantastic! I sat to tonight in a complete downpour and was bone dry. It also kept me warm with just my Core Lightweight baselayer underneath. This works just as good as the GORE-TEX that I had in the Marines.

Kept me dry but this raincoat has absolutely no place in a tree stand. It is so noisy there is no way I could draw on a buck without sounding like a bag of potato chips being crushed.

I bought this jacket and pants for a Newfoundland Moose hunting trip. I wore them everyday and stayed dry the entire time. They held up in the bush of Newfoundland which is rugged terrain. I would highly recommend this along with the pants. It literally poured one whole day and I never got wet!

I bought this set for a month long hunting gig fall 2021 in the Denali area of Alaska. Temps ranged from the upper 30s at night to the mid 40s to 50s during the day. Plenty of rain. The "Downpour" jacket and pant just did not cut it. Quiet for sure but I was wet and cold having 3 to 4 layers beneath. The wet starts at the sleeves and creeps up. Then the front zipper gives in especially when stalking in the wet under brush. The pants however did the best. Fit was good and was comfortable when dry. But, this system failed me on multiple days. I would not recommend this product. I get that it is labeled "whitetail" but the "whitetail" pattern is what I wanted and it is advertised "waterproof" gortex. It is not waterproof at all. Very disappointed.

Jacket is great. Totally waterproof and kept me warm in mildly cool conditions (40F). Some comments stated to buy a size larger than you wear. I do not suggest that. I typically wear a large and the went with an XL due to some reviews and the sleeves were slightly too long. As far as the quality of the jacket and getting what you pay for, Sitka is second to no one.

Lots of upside to this jacket. It’s a versatile shell in a quiet material with a great camo pattern. HOWEVER, this zipper on my jacket keeps separating at the bottom and undoing itself. A friend of mine who bought the same jacket at the same time experienced the same issue while bow hunting this weekend. Both jackets have been used minimally so it is likely to happen to others. A $350 price tag on an uninsulated jacket is already insane (ours were bought by our employer) and it’s even more ridiculous that the zipper doesn’t work. Extremely disappointed.

I put my down pour line (Jacket and pant) to the test on opening day of bow season in Wisconsin. Constant rain with periodic hard rain. Sat for 4 1/2 hours and came back home bone dry. I highly recommend this line of water proof gear. Sitka nailed it once again.

This jacket is a great tool in your closet. The finish is nice and quiet so on those super rainy days you are dry and concealed. It also doesn’t make noice rubbing up against branches. The sealed cuffs are great for keeping the elements out and your heat/warmth in. The super adjustable hood also is helpful keeping your head dry while not blocking visibility by staying on your head with the adjustment system. All around this jacket is a great investment and a well done piece by the team at Sitka.

First the good. This jacket is very well built. It is very quiet for a rain jacket. Now the bad, which I informed Sitka of via email around a month ago. The brushed face absorbs and wicks water. Which is fine and expected, except this outer fabric curves around the cuff and up into the sleeve (approx. 1.5 inches). Water will naturally drain toward the sleeve via gravity if your arms are downward. In steady rain, a significant amount of water "curls" around the cuff and wicks (capillary action, I suppose) up into the inside of the jacket. When this inner cuff area touches a mid or base layer, then the water continues wicking into these fabrics. Last December I was on stand in a medium rain for a few hours, and when I was done I was wet to my arm pits in my inner layers. I had my cuffs tight and over waterproof gloves and my hands on my lap or doing normal "tree stand things" the whole time. So, I wasn't holding a loose sleeve to the sky tempting fate. This evening, I wanted to test this garment again. I put on gray long underwear (tops and bottoms) on and a pair of waterproof and this jacket on. I then stood in the shower (weird, I know but I have a STEM background and was bored) for 10 minutes. Nothing leaked and the inner cuff remained dry. While in the shower, I kept my hands down mostly and if I raised them then I was careful not to allow water into the sleeves or any other openings. Then I hung it on a plastic hanger to dry. The water draining down the sleeve under gravity wicked right up the cuff. I checked 20 minutes later and the inner cuff was now very wet and even some of the gray interior fabric farther up the sleeve was now damp. This can be solved by placing a totally impermeable layer in the cuff that stops wicking at that location into the jacket. I invite Sitka to try my experiment or to explain how this has happened multiple times with such a predictable, physical explanation backing it up.

Nice and quiet and obviously 100% rain and wind proof. Fits true to size - I'm 6'3" 190 lbs and a large is perfect.

Hood could use a bigger brim and would be nice if it had wire on the inside so that you could bend and shape it. A bigger brim would allow you to wear the hood but also keep it loose so you can hear better. I don't wear the hood even in the rain as it's too tight and you can't listen.

Sleeves from elbows down are incredibly tight and make it very hard to layer without things riding up. Sleeve ends have velcro but are so narrow that you have to work incredibly hard to actually get them over a glove.

Found a great deal on this jacket and couldn't pass it up. I tried to find reviews before the purchase but just bit the bullet and went for it. Overall a outstanding jacket, its been utilized in the rough North Dakota winds but have been lacking in the rain test. Would recommend only that you wear a long sleeve with it because the seem on the inside of the arm will annoy you when wearing it. The stitch seems to have a irritating feel and could be a problem of a buyer. I tried two different stores and multiple jackets and sizes but all resulted the same. like I said In the beginning great jacket just wish they had it In marsh.

So, I just received the new version of the downpour jacket and tried it on. I must say, it is impressive. I like the quality and feel of the jacket. Like everything about it. And, the XXL fits me very well and should easily be able to fit over bulk clothes in colder temps...I am 6-2/220 lbs. Now, I do write this without trying it on in actual rain/downpour. Once I do test the jacket in wet weather, I will come back and update this review
