Why We Made This

A warm pair of pants to wear under waders shouldn’t be the job of your Saturday sweatpants. Our approach was focused on developing the ultimate pant that won’t compress under the weight water in waders, bunch at the boot and keep you incredibly warm. We found that the combination of high-gauge polyester knit face fabric bonded to high-loft fleece backer fits comfortably under waders. The tapered leg is the key to reducing bulk in the boot area. Rounding out this pant is the built-in belt for adjustments even when layered-up, the built-in stirrup for ease of getting into and out waders and the DWR finish to repel moisture without wetting-out the face fabric.

Love these for layering under Grinder pants when field hunting, or as an insulating layer in the tree stand on cold days. My only issue is the belt design up front. There needs to be a better solution. I live in these things around camp in the winter months also.

Love the pants, but the belt leaves a lot to be desired. It would be nice if I could use my own belt, but the loop channel is so narrow only the Sitka belt that comes with the pants can be used. I have two pairs of these pants. One of them the plastic clip broke rendering the belt useless and the other has to be continuously tightened. This is hard to do when you are wearing waders. I guess I need to do like my buddy did and get some suspenders to hold the pants up. We both agree this shouldn't be necessary. For the money spent I think Sitka could provide a much better belt system. That aside, these are the best wader pants on the market. They are extremely comfortable, slide right into waders and keep a fella nice and warm. I would highly recommend them.

Initial observation after 2 hunts: Best. Pants. Ever. I never realized how cold I was untuk these kept my legs toasty & socks from coming down. They're trim but the pants have a lot of give which forgives the cut (@ 51, I am not a trim cut guy). Despite a few pin holes I acquired in my waders, on the 2nd day, they kept me warm in 20°F weather. They dry quickly & can be worn to/from hunts. I wouldn't hesitate to wear them in to a store or restaurant after hunting. IF they hold up like the rest of my Sitka gear, these pants are one of the best hunting purchase I have ever made!

Too many misses here. No back pocket - that's where my wallet goes. No way to attach perry or sitka suspenders. (Belt is exposed at front, but enclosed at back.) Would have to use spring clips, which are destructive. Maybe it's just me, but any pants with weight and pockets that will be worn where I can't get to them to pull them up need suspenders.

Otherwise they're good pants, the right weight, and maybe a little on the small side. I wear size 32 pants, and always order M bottoms. Never L. These were too tight and the belt won't let out as much as it could. The thick piece on the end is trapped by loop. I'm returning the M and have ordered a L, intending to have a seamstress add a back pocket and expose a portion of the back belt or add a loop over the enclosed belt to facilitate suspenders.

Extremely impressed with these pants. Bought for end of season waterfowl in KS with temps below 10 and had no problem. The comfort is bar-none. I wish I had a neutral color to wear casually. If you're going to be hunting in anything below freezing, buy these pants.

Incredible piece of gear. The pants keep you as warm as down would but wick moisture and breathe like fleece. The outside is durable enough for walking into the stand, slide your insulated bibs over the top and you're set. Highly recommend.

These pants have ruined my life.

In the days/weeks/months/years before the gradients arrived at my doorstep, I lived a normal life. I had a fair-to-nice assortment of slacks, khakis and jeans that would get me through most weeks. On weekends or during hunts, I would cycle in a pair of hiking pants beneath waders or outer-layers to keep myself honest. Then they arrived.

No sooner than my feet could emerge from the perfectly-tensioned elastic ankle cuff and anchor into the foot holster did it dawn on me that I had never truly worn pants before. I work in a building that houses mostly lawyers, bankers and attorneys. The post-COVID business world has seen a noticeable shift in the interpretation of what exactly constitutes appropriate workplace attire. Our office building is a testament to that. Gone are the days of starched shirts and itchy we embrace both functionality and comfort, work and play, deal making and shot taking. These gradients could not have arrived at a more perfect crosswind. It took only a couple elevator rides before word began to spread. Soon you couldn't go two floors without a glance of marsh or timber optifade here and there. It wasn't until people began pairing the gradient pants with the gradient hoody that the visibility issues surfaced (not considered a con).

The pros of these pants have been well documented (incredible comfort, unmatched warmth, unparalleled fit, insurmountable move-ability, and a two-way name a few). Less documented are the stories of the early R&D days on the gradient project. In the late 1960s demo pairs were being provided to a host of willing customers to provide feedback on. One pair found its way into the hands of a young singer-songwriter from Slab Fork, West Virginia who’d recently left the Navy. He was to be touring the country in the coming months and had approached numerous outfitters inquiring as to a garment durable enough for consistent wear day-in and day-out, yet also comfortable and functional. In the eyes of the R&D team, the goal was simple: put the gradients through every test of wear-and-tear possible...not solely grueling field trials. In 1972, after 463 days of consecutive wear...this musician released a tribute to the gradients. Only at the time, his record label felt that broadening the subject of the song from a pair of pants to a romantic relationship would amplify its popularity. Alas, Bill Withers ‘Use Me’ both reads lyrically and listens as a song about a man who allows his girlfriend to walk all over him, and despite his friends best efforts…he enjoys the abuse so much that he can’t fathom leaving. Much like I experienced, the day you put these pants will ruin other pants for you. Forever. But brother, if you only’d wish that you were in my shoes.

I ordered the LT after reading reviews and they were still huge. I'm going to order a L and M and see if either work. Fingers crossed because they are SOOO WARM.

Upgrade from the originals. Tapered / fitted leg makes putting boots and waders on a breeze. Very warm pant. Wear with base layer as a stand alone or wear under waders and you will not get cold. I wear as a stand alone, under Hudson bibs and under waders. These are my go to hunting pants everyday. Very durable and hold up well.

My only negative is that they took away the zippered pocket on the thigh. That was a nice feature.

The Sitka Gradient Pants are hands-down the best wader pant out there. The legs are perfectly tapered to prevent bunching which makes getting in/out of your waders a breeze. They are extremely warm and comfy enough to lounge in all day long between hunts or at the camp. The only reason for 4 stars is that I've experienced the EXACT same problem that MoWaterfowel described in his review after hunting in them 3-4 times:

"The outside leg seam lines up with the ankle bone AND HURTS! This causes pressure from your boots/waders and over the course of time slowly increases in soreness until you can't take it any longer. They really should divert the seam away from the ankle bone via a gusset."

Hat's off to to Sitka for seriously raising the bar on wader pants with this innovative design. Get the ankle issue resolved and you'll have the design perfected in my opinion.

Love these pants under my waders. They’re comfortable and warm. Feel like a perfect fitting pair of sweatpants as far as comfort goes. As far as their fit, I wear a 38x34 in pants and I bought the XLT. They fit me a little big around the waist, but the belt does it’s job and holds them up. Perfect fit from the waist down though. I’d buy them again for sure.

They're great in some aspects, poorly designed in others. I'll start with the great. The tapered leg and stirrups are excellent and makes putting on my delta waders as easy as stepping into a pair of pants. They stretch well with movement. The downsides... The outside leg seam lines up with the ankle bone AND HURTS! This causes pressure from your boots/waders and over the course of time slowly increases in soreness until you can't take it any longer. They really should divert the seam away from the ankle bone via a gusset. Another downside is that the crotch isn't gusseted. Take a lesson from Duluth Trading and tailor the product to fit a guy's body (At $1K, your waders could use this too). Lastly, and I think this is the most overlooked product feature: the belt is awful as the clasp slips easily. Ever tried pulling up pants while wearing waders??? You offer amazing suspenders, but they're incompatible with this product due to lack of belt loops.

I just reminded myself how much I love these. I wore them all season last year and just put them on again for a hunt a few days ago. Hands down the most comfortable pants I own. Great for wearing under waders and a must have under the Hudson bib. However they are equally as great as an outer layer if you're not brush busting. I'm really only writing this review because I NEED these in a solid color, while I normally don't mind showing off my Optifade there's a few occasions that I'd love to wear sporting events, after the gym, work...hell everywhere.

I haven't had the chance to wear these in the field yet, but as of now I love these pants. First thing I noticed out of the box is that they're thicker than you may think, these things are no joke. They are probably the most comfortable sweats I've ever worn from a softness and warmth perspective, and I can see how the built in stirrups will be a lifesaver pulling on waders on an early morning. Can't give 5 stars until they see the filed but as of now great product! Need to see these things in solids so I don't ever have to take them off!

Wore these several times during teal. My waders sprung a bad leak. These pants kept the water off my skin completely. It was really amazing. The outer layer of the pants was soaked but the layer next to my skin stayed totally dry. The leak was bad enough that I had standing water in my boots but my legs stayed dry and warm. The fit under the waders was absolutely perfect. No discomfort around the ankles like I’ve had with every other wader pant.

Tried these on right away once I got them. These are so comfortable it's as if you aren't wearing any pants. The fleece on the inside is very soft, they seem durable, the tapered legs aren't too tight nor too loose. This was a concern of mine because I have larger calves. The pockets are deep in the front and I like how the belt clips together. The belt tightens easily as it has a large "pull tab" to tighten it which leads me to believe it'd be easy to tighten while wearing gloves. Also, I like that the belt is integrated into the waist line. The belt is only visible to the left and right of the fly approximately 6-8 inches. The rest of the belt on the hips and around to the small of the back is completely covered by the pant material. This seems like a great idea to help from the belt catching on waders, bibs, basically anything. It's a nice touch. The bottoms of the pants have the stirrups to keep them from riding up in your waders. The stirrups each have a line of rubber/latex (stickier substance) to probably help to keep them from sliding forward or back on your foot. Lastly, one thing I noticed was the inseam seems long and pants are baggy in that regard. It shouldn't affect much as it didn't seem to hinder my walking, crouching, or movement in any way. I'd give these a 4.5 out of 5 stars and definitely recommend them.

Pre-use review. Will update after the season.

The tapered legs, and form-fit ankle cuffs help the pant legs stay in place. This should help reduce bunching. The stirrups aren’t loose like most wader pants I’ve owned. They also help keep the pant leg firmly in place. The adjustable belt is a great addition. And having pockets in wader pants is always a plus. I pulled these on then put on my breathable waders to see how it felt. Based on that, I think I’m going to be very happy with these pants.

While it will be awhile before I can test these out in the marsh, I am already loving these. The fleece is crazy warm, the face of the pants feel awesome as well, but the taper towards the bottom is a game changer. While not cheap, I think these will be well worth the investment and will stand the test of time.
