From the whitetail hotbed of Iowa, Chris Bee is a SITKA ambassador and an expert bowhunter who chases whitetail across the country from opening day to the final hours of the season. We asked Chris to build out his perfect gear system in our latest Optifade Cover pattern: a cutting-edge camouflage that was engineered for maximum stealth in greener environments. He knows the devil’s in the details and took every nuance of whitetail pursuits into account for his system breakdown.
EARLY SEASON SYSTEM
The early season is all about being light, fast, and protected. It’s warm, the bugs are out, and you’re usually on the move. This is where SITKA’s early season system shines for me.
Equinox Guard Hoodie
This hoodie is a must-have for early season hunts. What I love about it is the integrated Insect Shield that keeps mosquitoes and ticks at bay without feeling like you're suffocating. It's lightweight and breathable, which is crucial when you're trekking through humid environments. The hood and face mask combo gives you extra concealment without having to carry extra gear.
Equinox Guard Pant
These pants are the perfect blend of mobility and protection. Like the hoody, they’re equipped with insect protection, but what stands out is how they move with you. Whether I’m crawling or hiking, the pants are comfortable, flexible, and dry extremely fast.
Equinox Guard Glove
I never go out without a solid pair of gloves, and the Equinox Guard Glove doesn’t disappoint. It is light and breathable, and it includes the trademark bit reduction fabric and Insect Shield so you don't get eaten up by mosquitos. They’re also touchscreen compatible, so you don’t have to strip off a glove every time you check your phone or GPS.
Flash Optics Harness
When you’re constantly glassing, you need your optics ready to go but also secured. The Flash Optics Harness keeps my binoculars safe and easily accessible. It’s compact and doesn’t bounce around when I’m moving, which is ideal for those early-season, high-energy hunts.
Tool Bucket
If you're a mobile hunter like me, having a reliable pack is non-negotiable. The Tool Bucket is one of my favorites because it’s got enough space for everything I need without feeling bulky. The design allows for easy access, so I’m never fumbling for gear, and the storage compartments are well-thought-out to give you quick access to essential tools.
MID SEASON SYSTEM
As the temperatures start to drop, you need gear that’s going to keep you warm and quiet without sacrificing mobility. Here’s my go-to mid-season Sitka system.
Stratus Jacket
The Stratus Jacket is my secret weapon during the mid-season. It has Windstopper, so it cuts the wind completely, which is key to comfort in those open-field hunts and the brushed finish helps keep things quiet. Layer it up, and it’ll keep you comfortable when the temperatures start to dip, but it’s also breathable enough for more active days.
Stratus Bib
I pair the jacket with the Stratus Bib, and it’s the perfect match. It offers wind protection just like the jacket, but what I really love is how comfortable and quiet it is. There’s enough room for layering, so you can adapt as the day warms up or cools down. And the articulated knees make kneeling or crouching a breeze.
Ambient 200 Jacket
When I need something a little warmer but still lightweight, I throw on the Ambient 200 Jacket. This jacket is like wearing a cloud—it's incredibly warm, won't weigh you down, and layers well under other pieces. It’s great for those cold mornings before the sun has fully risen or late evenings
LATE SEASON SYSTEM
Late season hunting is a different beast. When the temperature really drops and the wind cuts through like a knife, you need gear that can handle the worst conditions. That’s when I switch to my late-season system—it’s all about staying warm and quiet while waiting out those cold, long hours.
Fanatic Jacket
The Fanatic Jacket is like wearing a portable heater, but without all the bulk. It’s designed to trap warmth, which is perfect for the freezing temps of late November and December. One of the best features is how it’s body-mapped with Primaloft Silver insulation. That said, nothing tops how quiet this jacket is. No matter how many layers I’ve wearing underneath, I can move without sounding like I’m wearing a plastic bag.
Fanatic Bib
The Fanatic Bib is built for more than just warmth. The Windstopper by Gore-Tex Labs cuts out the wind while still letting moisture escape, which is key for long days in single-digit temperatures. The low-bulk seams and articulated knees make it comfortable when sitting for hours in a stand, and the full-length zippers along the legs make it easy to slip on over boots for ventilation when needed. To top it off, the bib is as quiet as they come—perfect for close encounters when silence is critical.
At the end of the day, having the right gear can make or break a hunt. It’s not just about keeping warm or staying dry, it’s about staying out there longer and being as comfortable as possible. Whether it's the early-season heat, mid-season gusts, or late-season chills, Sitka's system approach to gear has made a huge difference for me and always keeps up with whatever conditions I'm facing. Hunting’s never easy, but having reliable gear makes it a whole lot better.
