What Are the Different Types of Hunting Packs?
Hunting packs generally fall into several categories based on their design and intended use:
Day packs are lightweight and compact, typically 20–35 liters, designed for short hunts where you're returning to camp or your vehicle the same day. They carry essentials like water, snacks, a first aid kit, and basic gear.
Multi-day or expedition packs are larger (50–80+ liters) with more robust frames, designed for backcountry hunts lasting several days. They include features like sleeping bag compartments, hydration compatibility, and attachment points for additional gear.
Meat hauling packs (also called “freighter frames” or “load-out packs”) are specifically engineered to carry heavy loads of harvested game out of the field. They feature sturdy external or internal frames, load shelves, and meat bags or compartments. Many can handle 80–150+ pounds. Some hunters use a dedicated meat pack, while others prefer a versatile pack that converts between hunting mode and hauling mode.
Lumbar packs and fanny packs are minimalist options worn around the waist, useful for spot-and-stalk hunting where mobility and silence matter more than carrying capacity.
Bow and rifle-specific packs include integrated weapon-carry systems, such as bow boots, rifle scabbards, or dedicated straps that keep your firearm secure and accessible while keeping your hands free.
When choosing, hunters typically consider the terrain, hunt duration, expected game size, and personal preference for weight versus carrying capacity. Many serious hunters end up owning several packs for different scenarios.
What to Pack in a Hunting Backpack
Pack with purpose: start with your weapon-specific essentials—ammo or arrows, a razor-sharp knife, game bags, and paracord for clean, efficient meat care—then add optics and calls to close the distance. Keep yourself oriented and connected with a GPS or map-and-compass backup plus a satellite communicator, and cover emergencies with a headlamp, fire starter, whistle, and a compact first-aid kit. Round it out with an insulating hunting jacket or rain layer, 2–4 liters of water (filter or tabs for refills), and high-calorie snacks. For multi-day hunts, layer in lightweight shelter and sleep gear. Organize small kits in stuff sacks so the tools you need are always in reach, and tailor the load for weather, terrain, and hunt duration—nothing extra, nothing missing.
