Do You Have to Wear a Hat While Hunting?
You don’t automatically have to wear a hat every time you hunt—the real requirement is that you satisfy your state’s blaze-orange visibility rules. Most firearm big-game seasons demand 144–500 square inches of blaze orange above the waist so other hunters can see you. In many states you can meet that quota with either a blaze-orange vest or jacket, a blaze-orange hat, or both, while some jurisdictions and specific wildlife areas insist on a blaze-orange hat in addition to an outer garment. Check out our blaze orange hunting gear to find what’s right for you. Bowhunters during archery-only seasons and hunters positioned at least 12 feet up in a stand are frequently exempt. Because these details vary by state, season, and even individual public-land units, always double-check the current regulations where you plan to hunt before heading out.
